New Zealand Round 1

just heard from john! he and his buddy josh, a guide here in jackson, left for new zealand for a five week fishing adventure (well, josh is there 3 months), and we're almost 2 weeks in to their trip. they just got back from a 8 day backpacking trip and reported back that they caught 11 fish, ranging from 4lbs to 7.5 lbs (because extra half pound is crucial - thought colter would appreciate my precise reporting).

they're having a blast, but if you are reading this and can take a minute, say a prayer for john's knee. it sounded like it was really bothering him, and considering they're going to be walking 100 kilometers over the next 10-12 days, we're praying it gets better and not more irritated.

john said weather has been all over the place. warm, cold, and so far it's rained every day they've been there. john said it's like walking through a rainforest and from the pictures, it looks gorgeous. scariest thing he said he's done so far is start crossing a river, only to realize it was too intense and he couldn't get across. there's a picture in this series showing how high it was when he decided to turn back. crazy!!!

oh, interesting story. josh has done a trip like this before, and he is going to be in NZ for 3 months, so the boys decided they were going to buy a car in Christchurch, since it would be more cost efficient than renting a car for 3 months. so, they bought a suburu legacy, with plenty of room to keep all their gear and stuff. john said that on day 1 in to their trip, 10 miles in to the drive, the car starts sputtering and they think the gas gauge is broken. they find a car mechanic and 8 hours later determine the car is a clunker! the mechanic took extreme pity on them, charged them half of what he originally quoted them to check out the car, said they could leave the car at his shop for the next couple of weeks, and let them rent (for super cheap) a teeny, tiny 2 door car (josh calls it a red roller skate!). how they both fit in that car, with all their gear, is a mystery to me.....

more updates to come.
